Jesse Bering’s book, Perv: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us, is among the most accessible and entertaining forays into human sexuality ever written. However, the nature of the material and how Bering came to study it are born of bittersweet experiences. His more recent book, Suicidal, is a comprehensive foray into a topic rarely discussed. While many texts on suicidality stop at screening measures and observation protocols, Bering’s book explores this topic deeply and personally, from the extant research to philosophical arguments of the past. It also highlights some of his most original research into children’s beliefs about the afterlife.
